background
As a registered architect with training in both architecture and landscape architecture, I have focused on integrating contemporary urban architecture with a sensitivity to regional ecology and geography.  I first practiced in the Pacific Northwest, and that region's powerful dialog between city and nature continues to influence my way of working.  For ten years I was based in Miami which has transformed into a global cosmopolitan city.  My work there focused on Tropical Urbanism and how contemporary development can support growth which is sensitive to climate and regional culture. Since 2018 I have been based in Rome, a place which delivers daily lessons on humane urbanity, people-centered public space and the resilient social ecosystems it supports.  I am currently working in Africa and the US with a focus on integrating infrastructure resilience, biodiversity and creation of public spaces within the context of Health Care and Institutional projects.

design approach
In this rapidly changing world, it is increasingly important that we as architects work across scales and across disciplines.  The challenges we face are global, but individual buildings are the basic component of cities, and cities are increasingly the dominant face of larger landscape systems.

As a team builder and communicator, I have concentrated on facilitating development of technically challenging sites as well as building consensus for development of high profile or politically sensitive projects.  Across a range of project scales from new cities to furniture, I have always sought to collaborate actively with experts in other fields, listening to clients and community leaders to make sure the design best represents their interests, working closely with environmental experts and civil engineers to extend the project story beyond the building envelope and closely with builders so that the finished product can represent the best of their craft.
