overview
As the world’s largest conservation NGO, the Nature Conservancy is moving toward a more expansive approach to planning, combining social resilience with traditional efforts at protecting biodiversity.  Using techniques of traditional planning charrettes we were able to combine workshop facilitation and graphic synthesis to help Nature Conservancy scientists engage island communities and governments in strategies for increasing social, economic and ecological resilience in the face of climate change.  The results have been used to highlight local actions such as zoning changes, green infrastructure and ecological restoration which will reduce community vulnerability.

design approach
The second phase of the project included design of specific intervention projects to be used as examples of integrated conservation and social resiliency infrastructure.  The first funded pilot structure is a community structure for the fisherman's cooperative which will provide elevated facilities for boat storage and maintenance as well as common gathering space.  By consolidating existing scattered and vulnerable facilities, the project increases efficiency of land use and frees up stretches of shoreline for coastal habitat restoration - benefiting both the fishers and the fish.
