Proposed as the flagship new town for Vanke, one of China’s largest residential development companies, the 500 ac Quizhong site is located within an emerging park network in the southeast quadrant of Shanghai. The site was constrained by a network of agricultural canals, an elevated highway, and an adjacent industrial waterway. The project consists of a commercial town center, two schools, a park system, and a full range of housing types from individual cottages to mid-rise flats. The target market was professional Chinese who have lived abroad and are looking for a combination of Western parks and public space and more traditional Chinese housing configurations.
